Biodegradable Tube Launch Wednesday, 16th April 2008

World Première at Interpack: 100% Biodegradable Tube.
For what is believed to be the first time a 100% biodegradable flexible tube will be presented
at Interpack by Aisapack and Stanelco BioPlastics.
Biodegradability and sustainability are the key drivers in the development of this new
revolutionary package. Whilst all the materials of construction are biodegradable, substantial
levels of sustainability are achieved through the use of potato and corn starches.
Firstly these materials offer the advantage of using renewable resources. This allows reduction
in consumption of fossil resources and moreover in a reduction of CO2 emission compared to
oil-based plastics.
Secondly the material is biodegradable meaning that it will not persist in the environment as
long as oil based plastics and it can be composted, offering an eco-friendly disposal route or
second natural life to the package back in the ecosystem.
The biodegradable materials used are Bioplast® resins commercialised by Stanelco plc, UK.
Aisapack and its sister company Aisa, Switzerland; have developed the processing capability in
order to obtain state-of-art flexible tube packaging with industrial scale equipment for tube
production.
This biodegradable tube is constructed from an extruded sleeve cut-off at the desired length.
The moulded shoulder is then directly compression moulded onto the sleeve using an Aisa's
PTH machine. Decoration has been directly applied on the finished tube using dry offset
printing.
The biodegradable tube has an agreeable ergonomic feel thanks to seamless and flawless
bonding and forming. This offers great consumer appeal coupled with good gas barrier
properties - this biodegradable tube is ideally suited for the natural cosmetic, personal care,
and food markets.

Plastic Bag Debate Friday, 29th February 2008

Stanelco plc, the only bioplastics manufacturer headquartered in the UK, welcomes the
current debate on the effect of plastic products and particularly bags on the environment.
Stanelco is one of Europe's leading players in the bioplastics market and has a heritage of
over 15 years of research and development in this area. Headquartered in Southampton
where it has its research base, Stanelco makes and develops the basic bio polymers that
can be used to make products including bags, packaging and garden products out of
materials that are sustainable and that quickly return to the natural ecosystem at the end of
their useful life.
Stanelco's bio materials are all biodegradable, made from predominantly sustainable base
materials like potato starch, and will therefore degrade more rapidly than oil-based polymers
in the natural environment. Stanelco's materials start to break down in a matter of weeks,
significantly reducing the threat of animals and marine life being trapped, injured or killed.
The materials fully break down in months allowing the breakdown products to put nutrients
back into the ground to provide for the next cycle of crops. Furthermore, the inks used for
printing on the bags purchased by our customers can at their instruction be water based,
reducing the impact of solvent based inks on the environment.
Stanelco's commercial and development activities take place in the UK, with manufacture
provided by Biotec, its German subsidiary jointly owned with SPhere S.A. Stanelco recently
invested in further capacity at the German production factory, enabling it to have the
capacity of producing annually the bioplastics that could replace some 2.9 billion
conventional plastic bags. That equates to approximately one per week for every man,
woman and child in the UK.
Paul Mines, Chief Executive of Stanelco said:
"We welcome the press interest in this subject; Stanelco is well placed to supply the
materials required to make plastic products that use sustainable resources and minimise
man's impact on the environment. Adoption of our green technology is growing rapidly and
customer interest is high; and we are working with our partners and customers to deliver this
as rapidly as possible".

New RF Welders Tuesday, 12th February 2008

Stanelco RF Applications has unveiled two major innovations in Radio Frequency welding that solve
access issues and deliver major improvements in cost and operator efficiency. The new 'RF Portable Welder' and 'RF Stepper Welder' follow Stanelco's success with a 'Mobile Welder' in high hazard industries, where over 80 machines are in use providing exceptional seal integrity. The 600W Portable has been designed as a 'machine to material' unit which can be easily carried to different locations or to any level of a building. Weighing just 16kg, it meets the design goal of complying with UK Health and Safety carrying guidelines. This new approach creates the potential for RF sealing in a variety of areas that traditional, static RF equipment cannot reach. It is also a boon for customers who currently have to haul materials to their workshops, such as boat cover repairers, and can contribute significant savings in transport costs and workshop time. The flexible unit is designed to take on different tooling as the customer requires.
The second new product, the 'RF Stepper Welder', boasts a breakthrough design that delivers increased productivity by resolving several production and operation challenges. While the current Mobile Welder 'handgun' works well
for sealing bags with widths up to 30cm, the new 600W machine can easily produce seals of 1m and more. Stanelco's innovative design re-positions tooling into a unique flat plate, which makes seals in a series of
overlapping steps. The total length and degree of overlap can be changed by the customer. The RF field
is consistently applied on each step and uses low power to deliver uniform seal strength and cost efficiency.
The RF Stepper Welder also eliminates difficult and inefficient handling procedures. Now, a single operator
can supervise the simplified sealing process, with minimal handling, achieving major improvements in
ease of use and production time. Based on market research and responses from key customers, Stanelco is widening its product range to meet unfulfilled needs and to reach new markets. Presentations to key customers have generated very
positive feedback for the new products.
